Allgäuer Kässpatzen

Short hand-pressed spaetzle layered with grated Allgäuer Bergkäse, topped with golden fried onions. The Allgäu’s signature dish — heartier and cheesier than the Swabian version.

Maultaschen

Large pasta pockets filled with meat, spinach, onions and herbs — served in broth, pan-fried with onion and egg, or with potato salad. EU Protected Geographical Indication since 2009. Legend credits Cistercian monks who hid meat in dough during Lent and called them ‘Herrgottsbscheißerle’.

Allgäuer Bergkäse

Raw-milk hard cheese aged at least four months, nutty and mild. EU Protected Designation of Origin since 1997 — made only from Allgäu milk. Excellent on a Brotzeit plate or grated into Kässpatzen.

Zwiebelrostbraten

Pan-fried roast beef under a mountain of crispy golden onions with dark gravy — the classic Sunday meal, served on a bed of Spätzle or Kässpatzen.

Krautkrapfen

Pasta or yeast dough filled with sauerkraut, bacon and onions, rolled up, sliced, pan-fried and simmered in broth. Once peasant food, now an autumn and winter classic.

Flädlesuppe

Strong beef broth with thinly sliced pancake strips and fresh chives on top. A classic starter, especially in winter — on every traditional Gasthof menu.

Weekly market in Memmingen — Tuesday and Saturday

On Memmingen’s Marktplatz around 50 vendors set up their stalls: fruit and vegetables, poultry, fish, cheese, sausages, honey, spices, bread and flowers. Many producers sell directly.

Opening times: April to October 7:00–12:30, November to March 7:30–12:30. Ideal for shopping on arrival day or a Saturday morning — 10 kilometres from the apartment.
