Iller Cycle Route — ADFC 4-star quality route

The Iller cycle route connects the Allgäu Alps with the Danube city of Ulm over 146 km and is one of Germany’s highest-rated riverside routes (ADFC 4-star). Tannheim sits on the flattest section between Kirchberg and Memmingen — ideal for families and leisure cyclists.

From the apartment, day stages can be planned in either direction: northward through the Iller floodplain forests to Ulm, or southward via Memmingen and Kempten towards the Alps. Thanks to Tannheim station on the Leutkirch–Memmingen line, stages with a return by train are easy to arrange.

Iller floodplains — riparian forests and rare birdlife

The Iller is flanked by ecologically valuable floodplain forests — habitat for ash, oak, rare black poplar and silver willow. The “Lower Iller Floodplains” nature reserve and EU Habitats Directive site protect this unique river landscape. At the Stausee Tannheim, swans, greylag geese and cormorants nest on purpose-built gravel islands.

The major “Agile Iller” project is investing 70 million euros over ten years to renaturalise the river — the Iller is coming alive again, with new gravel banks, fish passages and relocated dykes.
